Ezera Research Fellowship for Africans – University of California

The University of California was founded in 1869, it’s a public research university system located in the U.S state of California and has 10 campuses, 5 medical centres, and 3 national labs.

The university attracts the best and students coming from all backgrounds, incomes, and ethnicities, now the University of California has over 280,000 students who benefit from a world-class education.

In the memory of Emeka Kalu Ezera (killed tragically in an automobile accident), who was a Graduate Student Instructor and doctoral candidate in Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley, an endowment has been established to support students coming from African countries, the funds are assigned to the centre for African studies to support graduate-level students concentrating in African studies.

Graduate students from West Africa who are interested in advancing scholarship in African Studies in humanities, public policy and social sciences, and who show solid leadership skills are prioritized by the Program.

Students who will receive an Ezera fellowship may also receive funds from the Rocca endowment, as these two are combined for administrative purposes. Students will have to submit only one application.

Fellowship Benefits:

  • The fellowship duration is two years.
  • Funds may be requested to cover travel, maintenance, or research costs, as relevant to enhance pre-dissertation and dissertation research in Africa.
  • The scholarship value will be in the $500 to $1000 range.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Applicants must be from an African country with priority given to candidates from West Africa.
  • Applicants must have been accepted for admission at the UC, Berkeley.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong academic, research, and leadership potential.
  • Applicants must show an interest in advancing scholarship in African Studies.
  • Students who are permanent residents or citizens of the United States are not eligible for this scholarship.
